What books are available about MacOS 9?

There were a large number of books published about using MacOS 9 when the operating system was the latest and greatest version of the MacOS.

Now that MacOS 9 books are available used, and practically are free, each is well worth purchasing either to keep a MacOS 9 system in top shape or just for historical interest. A handful of good ones are below:

Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters (4th Edition)

This is the best-selling Mac troubleshooting guide, now in its fourth edition. Most Mac problems don't require hardware repairs or advanced technical knowledge. You don't need to be an expert to fix your Mac. Not only will this book show you how to fix things, it will sharpen your diagnosis skills so that you can try to fix problems that aren't listed in the book. Sad Macs gives you the solutions to common problems in plain English and is appropriate for everyone, from near-beginners on up.

MacOS 9: The Missing Manual

The latest system software for the resurgent Macintosh platform is Mac OS 9, which includes over 50 new features. Despite the long list of enhancements, however, Apple ships Mac OS 9 without one of the most important features of all: a manual. O'Reilly/Pogue Press comes to the rescue with Mac OS 9: the Missing Manual. Award-winning author David Pogue brings his humor and expertise to Mac OS 9 for the first time in this lucid, impeccably written guide. Readers will appreciate the step-by-step guides to setting up small networks, the tutorials on Mac OS 9's new Multiple Users control panel, and the coverage of Mac OS 9's speech-recognition, color printing, digital video, and self-updating software features. Along the way, Pogue communicates the joy of using the little shortcuts, drag-and-drop surprises, and elegant design touches that make the Mac the most passionately championed computer in the world.

MacOS 9: The Complete Reference

At nearly 900 pages, it's safe to say that after reading Mac OS 9: The Complete Reference, you'll learn all you need to know about Apple's operating system. Gene Steinberg, author of several Mac-related books, has provided an all-encompassing guide to OS 9, though it isn't for the faint of heart. Although Steinberg covers the basics (installation, setting user preferences), this book is geared more toward users who are already familiar with the Mac OS and want to take their knowledge to the next level. Steinberg gives ample space to such topics as networking and AppleScript. He also gives special attention to setting up a PowerBook or iBook, including a lengthy, helpful explanation of configuring an AirPort Card for wireless Internet access. Mac OS 9 newbies will probably want to check out a less intimidating guide. But for those who wish to take full advantage of Apple's operating system, this book should reside right next to your candy-colored iMac.

Degunking Your Mac

Degunking Your Mac covers the Mac OS X Panther and earlier versions, including OS 9. It provides essential tips and tricks to help every Mac user bring his or her computer up to top performance. Organized by a twelve-step degunking process that will improve the performance of any Mac, this book will help you get organized (and stay organized), optimize your workspace, solve clutter problems, and keep your Mac running fast and smoothly.
