What removable storage is available for the iMac "Core Duo/Core 2 Duo"?
No internal removable storage can be added to any Intel-based iMac models. However, the discontinued education-only iMac "Core Duo" 1.83 17-Inch (IG) and iMac "Core 2 Duo" 1.83 17-Inch have a drive capable of writing CDs, and all other Intel-based iMac models have a drive capable of writing CDs as well as single and dual layer DVDs. For most users, alternatives probably are unnecessary.
However, regardless of the standard optical drive, you also can attach an external USB 2.0, or FireWire-based removable storage drive to the Intel-based iMac, such as a hard drive or a magnetic disk drive if needed.
Can Firewire "800" be added to the iMac "Core Duo/Core 2 Duo" models that do not natively support the standard?
The iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 24-Inch and all "Aluminum" iMac Core 2 Duo models are equipped with a single Firewire "800" port, but the other Intel-based iMacs are not. As all of the Intel-based iMac systems lack a PCI slot, there is no way to add Firewire "800" to systems that do not have it pre-installed.
What printers and scanners are compatible with the iMac "Core Duo/Core 2 Duo" models?
Apple has released a list of printers that have drivers pre-installed with MacOS X 10.4 "Tiger" for Intel. This includes a large number of printers from Apple, Brother, Canon, Epson, HP, Lexmark, Xerox and other companies.
In the list of printers that are compatible with Intel-based Macs, Apple mentions to "always check your printer manufacturer's website" for the latest drivers.
Apple also states that:
Bundled printer drivers and PPDs [PostScript Printer Descriptions] may not offer every feature of a printer, such as built-in faxing, scanning, or an optional sheet feeder. If your printer has a feature that is not available, contact the printer manufacturer for more information regarding the use of that feature. For example, the [Apple] LaserWriter 16/600 PS Fax driver allows many printing features, but not the built-in fax feature.
It is important to note the above, as some printers that work with MacOS X 10.4 "Tiger" for Intel may not offer complete functionality.
Before purchasing a printer for your Intel-based iMac, or upgrading from an older system with an older printer, you will want to verify complete compatibility from the manufacturer.
