Q&A: Power Mac G3 Q&A: Networking & Communication

How can I network the Power Macintosh G3 to my existing Mac?

For Macs that have Ethernet built in, like all Power Macs and some Quadras, you usually will just need a simple crossover cable to connect one Mac to one original or Blue and White Power Macintosh G3. You can look up your Mac or MacOS-Compatible here on EveryMac.com to see if your Mac has Ethernet pre-installed.

The excellent Mac networking site, Three Macs & A Printer, covers this topic in-depth in Setting up a Crossover Cable Ethernet Network.

What modem comes with the Blue Power Macintosh G3? Can one be added?

Custom configurations of the Blue and White Power Macintosh G3 allow for the option of an internal 56k modem with support for both K56 flex and V.90 standards. According to Apple's Developers Notes for the Blue and White Power Macintosh G3 "the modem interface on the Power Macintosh G3 logic board is a 70-pin connector for an Apple 56 Kbps modem. . . Apple does not support third-party development of modems for this slot."

If you decide not to purchase an internal modem at the time of purchase, you can purchase one at a later date, and at a premium, directly from Apple. Other options include using a Serial-to-USB adapter from Griffin Technology, KeySpan, or Momentum to hook a standard Macintosh modem to the Blue and White Power Macintosh G3 or purchasing a USB modem that plugs directly into the USB ports provided by the computer.

Can an ISDN, Cable, or ADSL connection be used with the Power Macintosh G3?

Yes. Along with every other Mac that has 10/100Base-T Ethernet pre-installed, both the original and the Blue and White Power Macintosh G3 series is designed to accommodate ISDN, Cable, ADSL, and other high-speed connections that plug into the Ethernet port.

For additional information on ISDN, Cable, or ADSL connections, please refer to Yahoo's directory listing.

Were pre-installed server configurations of the Power Macintosh G3 available?

Yes, server configurations of the both the original Power Macintosh G3 and Blue Power Macintosh G3 series are referred to as the Macintosh Server G3 series. For complete stats, configurations, and pricing information, please refer to the Macintosh Server G3 section of EveryMac.com.

Pre-installed server configurations of the original Power Macintosh G3 were discontinued on December 14, 1998 amd server configurations of the Blue Power Macintosh G3 series were discontinued on August 31, 1999.

How can the Power Macintosh G3 be physically secured?

Both the original and the Blue and White Power Macintosh G3 series have a standard Macintosh security port that can be used to provide a moderate level of security with a security kit, and both also have "lockable cover latches" to make it more difficult for unauthorized users to open the case in a lab or classroom setting.

The large handles on the "four corners" of the Blue and White Power Macintosh G3 can also be used to lock a security cable or a padded chain, which can then be locked to a building support to reduce the risk of casual theft.
