Can you upgrade the processor in the Power Mac G4 Cube? How is the Power Mac G4 Cube processor mounted?

Officially, Apple does not specify whether or not the processor in the Power Mac G4 Cube models -- the Power Mac G4/450 Cube and G4/500 Cube -- are upgradable and declines to provide instructions for end users to replace the processor.

However, both of the Power Mac G4 models have the processors mounted on a removable daughtercard with a 300-pin connector that is independent from the ROM, and as such, upgrading the processor is possible.

Installation instructions for a particular processor upgrade card should be provided with the upgrade card itself, but site sponsor Other World Computing provides helpful upgrade videos as well.

This OWC video provides instructions to install a PowerLogix PowerForce upgrade card:

OWC also has a video for the PowerLogix PowerCube, which replaces the entire top cover of the Power Mac G4 as well as the processor module.

Another helpful resource for processor upgrade cards for the Power Mac G4 Cube include an archived vintage chart from the now defunct CubeOwner.

Along with useful instructional videos, as you would expect, OWC sells processors -- in addition to memory, hard drives, and other upgrades -- that are guaranteed to be compatible with the Power Mac G4 Cube as well as all other Macs.
