How do you replace or upgrade the hard drive in the Power Mac G4 Cube? Does the Power Mac G4 Cube support "big drives"?

The Power Mac G4 Cube models -- the Power Mac G4/450 Cube and G4/500 Cube -- support a single Ultra ATA/66 (ATA-5) hard drive.

However, the Ultra ATA/100 standard is backwards compatible with the earlier Ultra ATA/66 standard -- just runs at the lower speed -- and it may be easier to locate an Ultra ATA/100 drive.

Officially, the Power Mac G4 Cube models do not support "big drives" and typically need a third-party driver, such as one from Intech to use hard drives larger than 128 GB. For machines that are not "mission critical", hacks are possible as well.

Hard drive installation is fairly straightforward and Apple provides both text and video instructions. Site sponsor Other World Computing also provides an easy-to-follow video:

Along with useful instructional videos, as you would expect, OWC sells hard drives -- in addition to processors, memory, and other upgrades -- that are guaranteed to be compatible with the Power Mac G4 Cube as well as all other Macs.
