What are the "pros and cons" of the Power Mac G4 Cube? Is it right for my needs?

Please note that the Power Mac G4 Cube was placed on "indefinite hold" on July 3, 2001.

Like any other purchase, only you can make the decision whether or not the Power Mac G4 Cube is the right Mac for you, but you can evaluate the pros and cons of the model to see if your needs are met.

This "run down" may be helpful in making a decision:

Pros:

  • Attractive, compact case design.
  • Easy to upgrade the memory, relatively easy to upgrade the hard drive and processor as well.
  • Firewire "400" standard.
  • Support for MacOS 9/Classic applications booting MacOS X 10.4 "Tiger" or lower, and can boot MacOS 9 as well. Can be "hacked" to run MacOS X 10.5 "Leopard".

Cons:

  • Expensive (compared to Power Macintosh G4 models available at the time of its release).
  • Internal expansion somewhat limited by a single hard drive, three memory slots.
  • Video card upgrades often require "hacking".

If you need a compact and attractive Mac, you likely would be best served with a Mac mini. However, the Power Mac G4 Cube has its enthusiasts, particularly among collectors.
