G3 Q & A:
Software Compatibility
What version of the MacOS is
pre-installed?
The original PowerBook G3 came with MacOS 8.0 pre-installed. The "Wallstreet" PowerBook G3 series initially came with MacOS 8.0 pre-installed, and later had MacOS 8.1 or 8.5 pre-installed, while the "Bronze" series originally shipped with MacOS 8.6 and later shipped with MacOS 9 pre-installed. The last PowerBook G3, the PowerBook G3 "FW" (FireWire) series shipped with either MacOS 9 or MacOS 9.1.
All models in the PowerBook G3 series are compatible with MacOS 9, regardless of the version that was pre-installed.
Can the PowerBook G3 run MacOS X?
Throughout the development of MacOS X, Apple stated that the new operating system would be "optimized for G3-based systems". Fortunately, this plan was not changed, and as a result, all models in the PowerBook G3 series, except for the 1st Generation, or "original" PowerBook G3, can run MacOS X Public Beta.
For complete specifications and pricing information, see the PowerBook G3 specification pages.
Can the PowerBook G3 run Linux?
The original PowerBook G3, "Wallstreet", "Bronze", and "FW" PowerBook G3 series are each fully supported by LinuxPPC 5.0. For additional information regarding using Linux on your Mac, check out LinuxPPC.com and YellowDogLinux.com.
Can the PowerBook G3 run Windows 98? Windows NT?
As shipped, all models in the PowerBook G3 series can run either MacOS 8.6 or MacOS 9, as well as MacOS X. However, just like other G3-based Macs, the PowerBook G3 series can run both Windows 98 and Windows NT through an emulator program such as Connectix Virtual PC or Insignia SoftWindows 98 5.0. The performance should be around the level of a lower-end PC laptop.
If you know of any hardware solutions for running PC-based operating systems on a PowerBook G3, please share. Thanks.
Are all PowerBook G3 models Y2K-compliant?
[02.21.2000 Update: Now that "Y2K" has come and gone with little impact, this answer is no longer relevant. Nevertheless, the original answer remains below for "historical" reference.]
Absolutely. Like
all other Macs, all models in the PowerBook G3
series are fully compatible with the year 2000 and
beyond. The original Macintosh
(128k)
and Macintosh
512k are
compatible until 2040, and all other Macs are
compatible until an astonishing 29,940. Check out
Apple's MacOS
and the Year 2000
page for additional information and testing that
you can perform to ensure that all of your software
is Y2K-compliant as well. To make sure that all of
your software is up-to-date, check out
VersionTracker.
