Apple iPod 5GAlthough it was marketed as a portable digital audio player that also plays video, the Apple iPod Fifth Generation (with Video) was Apple's first entrant into the nacent portable video market. It uses a 30 GB or 60 GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive, capable of supporting "up to" 7,500 songs or "up to" 15,000 songs in "128-Kbps AAC format". Additionally, Apple reports that the 30 and 60 GB drives, respectively, can hold "over 1000" or "2000" 4 minute videos in "H.264 750-Kbps video with 128-Kbps audio". Both capacities use a case with either an "iBook white" or "jet black" front and a chromed stainless steel back -- 31% or 12% thinner, 30 and 60 GB model respectively, than the previous full-sized iPod models -- and have a "2.5-inch (diagonal) QVGA transflective over 260,000 color LCD display" (320x240, .156-mm dot pitch) with a "white LED" backlight that is both larger and higher-resolution than earlier iPod models.

The iPod 5G can immediately display many types of photos transferred directly from a digital camera using the iPod Camera Connector (US$29), and can display photo slide shows on the internal display or a television using the included AV cable (S-video, data and audio output, and a variable line output port are provided by the optional Universal Dock (US$39) that also provides support for the Apple Remote (US$29). Unlike earlier iPod models, it also supports video playback on the internal display or on a television (at a maximum resolution of 480x480).

Apple reports that the 30 GB model provides 14 hours of music playback, 3 hours of slideshows with music, and 2 hours of video playback, and the 60 GB model 20 hours of music playback, 4 hours of photo slideshows with music, and 3 hours of video playback.

Despite the age of this device, site sponsor OWC has inexpensive, compatible headphones and some upgrades and parts for vintage iPods while supplies last.
