The Apple iPod photo*, as the name implies, added photo storage and viewing capabilities to the iPod series. It uses a 40 GB or 60 GB 4200 RPM ATA-66 hard drive, capable of supporting "up to" 10,000 songs or "up to" 15,000 songs in "128-Kbps AAC format", respectively, as well as many as 25,000 photographs in iPod viewable format.
Although Apple considers this model to be a member of the iPod (4G) series -- and it shares the "ClickWheel" for navigation and the same basic case design (with an "iBook white" front and a chromed stainless steel back) -- it offers many improvements, perhaps most notably color (a two inch diagonal 65,536 color LCD with an LED backlight).
Major software improvements include color in all interface elements and applications, a new font called "Myriad", and support for viewing photographs, optionally with synchronized music, on the internal display and on a television or projector using the included AV cable via the custom headphone jack that is capable of video output (line out and S-video provided by the dock, which along with the AV cable, was sold separately after February 23, 2005).
The battery life also is improved compared to the iPod (4G), offering up to 15 hours of music playback and 5 hours of slideshows with music, although the skip protection is reduced from 25 minutes to 17 minutes.
On models shipped before February 23, 2005, it is worth noting that either an iPod-compatible media reader or computer are required to transfer photographs to the iPod photo, and only photos transferred through iTunes 4.7 or higher -- which converts photos into a "thumbnail" format -- immediately can be viewed on the iPod photo itself. After February 23, 2005, the iPod photo (M9830LL/A) was capable of immediately viewing many types of images transferred through the optional iPod Camera Connector (US$29).
*For those truly interested in minutia, this model was introduced on October 26, 2004 as the iPod Photo (capitalized), and on November 16, 2004, Apple changed it to iPod photo (lowercase).
