What removable storage is available for the iMac G5?

No internal removable storage can be added to any iMac G5 models. However, all iMac G5 models are capable of writing to CDs, single layer DVDs, or dual layer DVDs. For most users, alternatives probably are unnecessary.

However, you also can attach an external USB 2.0 or FireWire-based removable storage drive to the iMac G5, such as a hard drive or a magnetic disk drive if needed.

What ports are provided by the iMac G5?

For exhaustive details regarding the ports for each iMac G5 system, please refer to the ports pages for the original iMac G5, iMac G5 "Ambient Light Sensor", and iMac G5 "iSight" models.

What is AirPort? How much faster is AirPort Extreme?

AirPort (802.11b) provides a maximum wireless data rate of 11 megabits per second, and AirPort Extreme (802.11g) provides a maximum wireless data rate of 54 megabits per second, which is five times faster. AirPort Extreme is backwards-compatible with AirPort, and works in much the same way. However, it is worth noting that at 54 megabits per second, the "Base Station range" is only 50 feet, whereas the range is 150 feet at 11 megabits per second.

AirPort Extreme was optional in the original models -- the iMac G5/1.6 17-Inch, G5/1.8 17-Inch, and G5/1.8 20-Inch -- and standard in subsequent "Ambient Light Sensor" and "iSight" models.

What is Bluetooth? How much faster is Bluetooth 2.0+EDR?

Apple reports that Bluetooth is:

A cutting-edge open specification that enables short-range wireless connections between desktop and notebook computers, personal digital assistants, mobile phones, camera phones, printers, digital cameras, keyboards and even a computer mouse. Bluetooth wireless technology uses a globally available frequency band (2.4GHz) for worldwide compatibility.
In a nutshell, Bluetooth technology unplugs your digital peripherals and makes cable clutter a thing of the past. . . You can link your Palm OS-based handheld device, mobile phone and other peripherals with Bluetooth technology -- and do it wirelessly, within a 30-foot range.

Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate), is three times faster than earlier versions.

Bluetooth 1.1 was optional in the original models -- the iMac G5/1.6 17-Inch, G5/1.8 17-Inch, and G5/1.8 20-Inch -- and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR was standard in subsequent "Ambient Light Sensor" and "iSight" models.

What type of modem is standard with the iMac G5?

The iMac G5 models shipped standard with an internal 56k v.92 modem with the exception of the iMac G5 "iSight" models -- the iMac G5/1.9 17-Inch (iSight) and G5/2.1 20-Inch (iSight) -- which do not have nor support an internal modem. An external Apple USB modem could be bought at the time of purchase for US$49.
