What are the "pros and cons" of the PowerBook G4 models? Is one right for my needs?

Like any other purchase, only you can make the decision whether or not the PowerBook G4 is the right Mac for you -- and there are a huge number of models with varying capabilities -- but you can evaluate the pros and cons of the series to see if your needs are met. This summary may be helpful in making a decision:

Pros:

• Relatively lightweight, sleek designs.
• A variety of screen sizes are offered for those interested in maximum portability or maximum viewable area.
• Top performance and graphics capability when compared to other models available at the same time.
• All models support an external display in "dual display" mode, many with DVI capability.
• Generally excellent -- although this varies by model -- networking capabilities with extensive wireless and Bluetooth support.
• Memory is easy to install in most models.
• DVD standard in all models, with a variety of optical drives offered by default and upgrades available.
• PC card slot in 15-Inch and 17-Inch models makes it possible and generally inexpensive to add more ports -- such as external Ultra SCSI or Serial ATA.
• Standard internal 56k modem can be useful, particularly when travelling.
• All models support MacOS 9/Classic applications and some can boot MacOS 9 as well.

Cons:

• Processor cannot be upgraded and upgrading the hard drive can be a pain.
• No "swappable" expansion bays like the PowerBook G3 models that the PowerBook G4 line replaced.
• 12-Inch PowerBook G4 models do not have a PC card slot.
• More expensive than the less powerful iBook models available at the same time.

If performance, portability, MacOS 9/"Classic" support, and a PC card slot are important, then a PowerBook G4 would be ideal. If MacOS 9/"Classic" support, PC card support, or an internal modem are not relevant, but the PowerBook G4 otherwise meets your needs -- and price is not an issue -- you might also consider an Intel-based MacBook or MacBook Pro.
