January 13, 2010

This month, EveryMac.com features a complete overhaul of the PowerBook G3 Q&A, a handful of other useful Q&As, and an all new Facebook "Fan Page". The Ultimate Mac Lookup has been updated with many additional model numbers and serial number "snippets" as well.

Despite its vintage, the PowerBook G3 has its enthusiasts -- or at least those who remember it fondly -- because of its quality keyboard, battery life that remains quite respectable, and expansion unequalled by modern Mac notebooks.

For those interested in getting the most out of a PowerBook G3, either for day-to-day or "legacy" use, the largely rewritten PowerBook G3 Q&A answers "How do you upgrade the RAM in the PowerBook G3 models? How much RAM of what type do these systems actually support?" and "Is it possible to upgrade a PowerBook G3 to a SuperDrive or Blu-ray?" and everything in between.

EveryMac.com now provides notification of new Q&As and more via an all new Facebook "Fan Page". If you use Facebook, please show your support of EveryMac.com by becoming a fan today. Thanks!

EveryMac.com's Ultimate Mac Lookup -- which allows you to dynamically lookup G3 and later Mac specs and iPod and iPhone specs -- has been updated with additional Serial Number "snippets" and Model Numbers. If you bought or received a new Mac, iPod, or iPhone over the holidays, please look it up by the last three characters of its serial number. Thousands of identifiers are included already, but if yours isn't, please send it in. With your help, the lookup feature will get better and better. Thank you.

To be notified automatically of new Q&As, please use RSS, Twitter, or Facebook. In case you missed one, Q&As since the last major update include:

  • What are the differences between the iPhone 3GS and the Google/HTC Nexus One?
  • Can you use the iPhone with an external keyboard? What external keyboard options are available?
  • What are the capabilities of the optical drive provided by the PowerBook G3 models? Is it possible to upgrade a PowerBook G3 to a SuperDrive or Blu-ray?
  • How do you upgrade the RAM in the PowerBook G3 models? How much RAM of what type do these systems actually support?
  • Is the CPU on the PowerBook G3 upgradable? How is it mounted? Are third-party processor upgrade cards available?
  • How do you replace or upgrade the hard drive in the PowerBook G3 models? Do these models support "big drives"?
  • What type of expansion bays are provided by the PowerBook G3? Are all PowerBook G3 expansion bays compatible with one another? What types of capabilities do the PowerBook G3 expansion bays support?
  • Which PowerBook G3 models support AirPort? Can AirPort be added to PowerBook G3 models without internal support?
  • How many different lines of PowerBook G3 models are there? What are the major differences between each PowerBook G3 line compared to one another?
  • How do you upgrade the RAM in the "White and Black" MacBook? How much RAM of what type do these models actually support?
