Apple eMacThe Apple eMac G4/700, originally exclusively for education, but available later for both the consumer and education markets, features a 700 MHz PowerPC 7441 (G4) processor with the AltiVec "Velocity Engine" vector processing unit and a 256k on chip level 2 cache, 128 MB of PC133 SDRAM, a 40 GB Ultra ATA/66 hard drive, a tray-loading 24X CD-RW drive for the consumer market (8X "Combo Drive" after August 13, 2002) and the choice of either a 32X CD-ROM drive or an 8X Combo Drive for the education market (CD-ROM option discontinued on February 4, 2003), and NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM in an all-in-one case with a 17.0" (16.0" viewable area) CRT display (resolution support up to 1280x960 in 24-bit color).

The eMac G4/700 shipped with an ice white Apple "Pro" keyboard and mouse, and could be configured with either MacOS 9.2 or MacOS X 10.1.4 as the default operating system. Custom configurations also were available.

Details: *The education-only M8655LL/A and /B shipped with a 32X CD-ROM drive. The education-only M8578LL/A and /B shipped with a DVD-ROM/CD-RW "Combo" drive that "reads DVDs at 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at 12x speed, writes CD-RW discs at 8x speed, [and] reads CDs at 32x speed".

The first consumer model (M8577LL/A) shipped with a 24X CD-RW drive that could write CD-R at 24x, CD-RW at 10x, and read CD-ROM at 32x. However, a clever reader reported successfully cloning the hard drive via Target Disk Mode directly from a later eMac G4/1.25 (USB 2.0) running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a). Mac OS X 10.5.8 works without issue on this model when cloned in this manner, it just cannot be installed via the install DVD.
