I have a variety of educational programs that only run in MacOS 9. What is the fastest Mac capable of booting into MacOS 9? Which are the last Macs capable of booting into MacOS 9?
You are not alone in your desire to continue to use MacOS 9 applications. There probably are others who also are interested in the idea of having a pure MacOS 9 system for dedciated "legacy" use.
The short answer to your question is that the Power Macintosh G4/1.25 DP "Mirrored Drive Doors" is the fastest stock Mac capable of booting in MacOS 9.
For your reference, and others interested, the following systems in each series are the last capable of booting in MacOS 9. Later PowerPC-based Macs are capable of running MacOS 9 applications within the MacOS X "Classic Environment" provided by MacOS X versions up to 10.4 "Tiger" (the "Classic Environment" is not supported in MacOS X 10.5 "Leopard" even on PowerPC-based Macs).
Power Macintosh G4

For complete MacOS 9/Classic compatiblity of all PowerPC G3 and later PowerPC-based Macs, please refer to the MacOS 9/Classic Support Capability listing.
Site sponsor Operator Headgap Systems specializes in stock and heavily upgraded Macs capable of booting both MacOS X and MacOS 9, as well as systems that can run MacOS 9 applications within MacOS X.
Site sponsor OHS provided the following additional information and comments.
The fastest Mac that can boot MacOS 9 is the Power Macintosh G4/1.25 DP "MDD" if you only consider stock systems. Those models are far and few between on the used market.
We sell an upgraded 1.8 GHz Dual Power Macintosh G4 Sawtooth that boots natively in MacOS 9 and will clean its clock. Of course it can run MacOS X as well. We also build this same upgrade in Digital Audio and QuickSilver models all with new Hitachi 7200 rpm Hard Drives, new Pioneer A11 SuperDrives, etc.
These units are more readily available since the base models are more prevalent. We build units just like these for musicians, graphic artists, and print houses. Anyone needing the fastest MacOS 9 machine around needs to talk to us. They all feature our 90 day warranty, but also include manufacturers warranties on the components. The processors we use are the Sonnet units that come with a 3 year factory warranty.
